POLYTRAUMA AND BLIND REHABILITATION CENTER
(Work completed at Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture)
Sited within a 92-acre campus in Palo Alto, CA, the Veteran's Administration's Polytrauma & Blind Rehabilitation Center will provide hospital and clinic facilities to severely injured veterans. The design, taken through the Design Development phase, integrates the needs of the patients, care givers and families navigating the arduous rehabilitation process. A central garden was designed to provide contemplative space, a terrain park for physical therapy and a celebratory stage for patients graduating from the program. Elements were organized along a central wall, providing tactile therapy elements and seating. Additionally, courtyards, an active recreational garden and a labyrinth were integrated into the interior and exterior of the building. Planting and materials were selected to support physical and emotional healing.
