MISSION CREEK SPORTS PARK
(Work completed at Marta Fry Landscape Associates)
Finding the poetry within the strict site development constraints and packed program for this 3.5 acre public sports park presented a unique design challenge on this project. The goal was to transform a former industrial site under a busy freeway and adjacent to a working pump station into a vibrant community sports park in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood.
The scheme artfully sites sports courts and other programmatic requirements within a forest of 50' and 70' tall freeway columns. Open site lines and strategic lighting keep the park feeling safe into the evening. Dramatic sweeps of planting create bold patterning and reference water and movement as they knit the space together visually and functionally. The project has been a resounding success, with basketball courts, sand volleyball, tennis, a human-powered boat launch, a kayak storage shed, an enclosed dog run and pedestrian paths activating the space year round.
